The project involves a total of 7 Ph.D. students, and 5 faculty (CMU: Biegler, Grossmann, Hooker; Lehigh: Linderoth; UPitt: Schaeffer). A webpage describing this project can be found in: http://egon.cheme.cmu.edu/ewocp/ Companies interested in participating in this research program should contact grossmann@cmu.edu - 2006 INFORMS Annual Meeting. This meeting will take place in Pittsburgh, November 5-8, 2006. http://www2.informs.org/Conf/Pittsburgh06/ There will be several sessions on Enterprise-wide Optimization, on MINLP, open-source MINLP and global optimization. If you have an interest in submitting a paper to these sessions, please contact Ignacio Grossmann, grossmann@cmu.edu. The deadline is May 15, 2006. - Faculty News Larry Biegler was featured in the international press for his work with colleagues in Chile in the area of wine optimization. http://www.cheme.cmu.edu/newsevents/news/archive/05-06/lb01wine.htm Larry is spending a sabbatical in Fall, 2006 as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Heidelberg. Ignacio Grossmann delivered the lecture, "A Logic-based Framework for Discrete-Continuous Optimization of Process Systems," as part of the Computation for Design and Optimization Distinguished Speakers Series at MIT on February, 8, 2006. He also delivered the Pfizer Distinguished Lecture at the University of Kansas, "Advances in Optimization Approaches to Process Systems Engineering," on April 4, 2006. Ignacio also gave the plenary talk, "Computational Methods for Enterprise-wide Optimization of Process Industries," at the DIMACS and ExxonMobil Workshop on "Computational Optimization and Logistics Challenges in the Enterprise," on April 19, 2006 that was organized by Kevin Furman:. http://dimacs.rutgers.edu/~arty/colce/ Erik Ydstie delivered the plenary talk, "Supply Chain Management," at ADCHEM 2006 http://www.enq.ufrgs.br/adchem2006/. He has also been selected to give the 2006 Roger Sargent Lecture at Imperial College in December 2006. Erik gave a seminar at Georgia Tech on March 15 on Complex Process Networks. He has been invited to give a seminar at UCSB on May 11 on Process Control and Thermodynamics. He continues consulting on fluid bed reactors for making solar grade silicon. On April 20 Christy White and Erik took part in scale up and commercialization discussions about the new process with Fluor and REC Silicon in Orange County CA. Erik participated in the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Board meeting in Phoenix in February. iLS is in the final stages of testing the beta version of the adaptive controller. The controller will be tested by Emerson process management for power plant super-heater control this summer. - Student News Anton Pfeiffer, http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/apfeiffe/, student of Steinar, successfully defended his Ph.D. exam on April 18, 2006. He will be joining the technological leadership program in Northrop Grumman Corporation. Soumitra Ghosh, http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/soumitrg/, student of Mike Domach and Ignacio, will be defending his Ph.D. on May 1, 2006. He will be joining Bayer Corporation. Ashish Agrawal, http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/ashisha/, student of Ignacio and Bob Harper at Computer Science, will be defending his Ph.D. on May 5, 2006.
